We didn't set out to study anything. We just looked at our own Google Search Console data out of curiosity, and a pattern jumped out that we think says something real about how students actually experience math — not the math itself, but the moment right before they even ask for help.
The vocabulary is genuinely all over the place
Search impressions split across wildly different terms for what is, mathematically, the exact same request:
- "calculus solver" and close variants — roughly 531,700 impressions
- "derivative" and close variants — roughly 200,800 impressions
- "calculator" as the operative word — roughly 189,000 impressions
- "differentiat-" (differentiate/differentiation) — roughly 35,200 impressions

And a meaningful number of students can't spell the term at all
At least 22 distinct misspellings of "derivative" or "differentiation" show up in a single year of search data, including:
- "derivitive calculator"
- "differentation calc"
- "derivate solver"
- "derivitave calculator"
- "calcualtor" and "claculator" as typo variants of "calculator" itself
These aren't rare, one-off typos — they're common enough to independently register real search volume.
Why this might matter more than it looks
It's tempting to read this as a trivial SEO curiosity — "people misspell things, so what." We think there's a more human read: for a real number of students, uncertainty about calculus shows up before the math even starts — at the point of typing the question. If you're not confident how to spell or name what you're stuck on, that's a small, specific kind of math anxiety that's easy for a textbook, a teacher, or an EdTech product to overlook, because it happens in private, in a search bar, not in a classroom.
That has a practical implication for anyone building tools or content for students: matching a student's actual words matters more than matching the "correct" terminology. A resource titled only "Differentiation Rules" may simply not be found by the exact students who need it most, because they never thought to call it that.

This is drawn from real search traffic to one specific, free calculus tool over 7 months — not a formal academic study or a survey of a representative student population. We think it's a genuinely interesting real-world signal, not a definitive claim about "all students."
